Why we practise mindfulness and loving-kindness
This week, at a meditation group we attend, the guided mindful breathing practice included a simple reminder that stayed with me:
"As awareness and empathy grow, both inner and outer conflict begin to ease."
This comes from a Buddhist perspective, where these two core qualities are practiced: mindfulness and loving-kindness (metta).
We all know how easily the mind can become busy and critical - the “monkey mind”
that worries, replays conversations, judges ourselves, or creates worst-case scenarios. When we’re caught in that, tension builds internally, and it often spills outward into our relationships, leading to misunderstanding or conflict.
Through mindfulness, we begin to notice these patterns instead of being driven by them. Through loving-kindness, we learn to soften how we respond - to ourselves first, and then to others. Over time, this doesn’t remove life’s challenges, but it changes how we meet them.
Peace doesn’t begin when everything outside us is fixed. It begins in how we relate to this moment.
At Heartsong, this is a thread that runs through and informs the work we do. Whether it's meditation, mantra, reiki, or singing for well-being, each practice supports these same foundations of mindfulness and loving-kindness. For example, in singing, the inner critic often shows up as the voice that says “I can’t sing” or “I shouldn’t try.” Through these practices, we learn to notice that voice with awareness, and meet it with kindness instead of judgement.
If you'd like to explore any of these practices in a welcoming and supportive space, we offer both group and individual sessions.
We look forward to welcoming you...
