The Courage to Sing: Breaking Free from Shame and Silence
The Courage to Sing: Breaking Free from Shame and Silence
For decades, we’ve met incredible people who carry a deep fear of singing – those who won’t even sing “Happy Birthday” aloud, who believe they’re tone-deaf, or who’ve been told they simply can’t sing. Many have followed us quietly on social media for years, gathering courage from afar, while others have sat in their cars outside our workshops, too scared to step inside, before they take that first step.
Why is singing something that can feel so hard and scary?
Often, it starts with shame – a feeling that took root early on when someone said, “You can’t sing.” Maybe it was a teacher, a family member, or a friend. That one comment can echo for years, silencing a voice that just wants to be heard. We lose the simple, beautiful joy of singing out loud and in community, and the fear grows so big that even singing at home or with family feels impossible.
But here’s the truth: it’s never too late. We regularly welcome students in their 80s and beyond who come to reclaim that joy and freedom. Singing isn’t about perfect notes or polished performances – it’s about expressing who you are, sharing your heart, and finding your authentic voice.
Why Courage Matters
Courage is what it takes to break free from the silence and shame. It’s the courage to sing that first note, to try even when your voice shakes or feels blocked, or there are obstacles to cross. It’s the courage to say “yes” to yourself, to allow your voice to be heard in a gentle, supportive space.
When you find that courage, everything changes. Singing becomes a gift – a way to connect with yourself and others, to heal, and to celebrate life’s joys and challenges.
How We Support Your Journey
At our singing retreats, we create a warm, welcoming space where you’re never judged and always supported. Here, you can explore your voice at your own pace, surrounded by people who understand your fears and cheer you on.
We use simple vocal techniques that you can practice to strengthen your voice, mindfulness and meditation practices, and joyous group singing to help you open your voice and your heart. We honour each person’s unique journey, celebrating every step – whether it’s singing “Happy Birthday” without fear or performing a solo on stage.
Stories of Transformation
Every voice that has found its way to us carries a story – from those who hid their singing for decades to those who’ve just begun to explore their sound.
Here’s what some of our guests say:
“I cannot praise Ema and Pete who lovingly created HeartSong Normandie enough. The thought and care that they provide for every single person who are fortunate enough to join them goes above and beyond all expectations. If anyone is nervous or anxious – don’t be. The whole experience whatever your levels/needs turns into one joyful experience from the moment you enter their door until the moment you leave. There is humour and love in abundance.”
“Always a fun and nurturing environment for any ability.”
“It was just lovely to sing again and I thoroughly enjoyed the personal coaching, Peter - I now have a much better understanding of how to sing well and, without a doubt, much more confidence in my abilities (no more miming for me!). It feels like you really have helped me find my voice - thank you. And I’m still smiling at all your jokes.”
“After 55 years of miming, Peter & Ema gave me reassurance and belief (or should that be faith?) that I might, with perseverance, be able to sing in tune. It was hard, hard work but made good fun by the loving approach.”
“Having met Peter in Brighton over 25 years ago doing a singing course I have come to realise the uniqueness of the experience he offers in terms of increasing confidence in singing and getting people to overcome their inhibitions. Peter manages to bring people together through singing in a way that is quite frankly at times nothing short of miraculous and the singing holidays are a perfect place to spend time with like minded people, often making lasting friendships, in my case over 20 years.”
