Why singing with others is good for you...

The benefits of singing together

"From the beginning of human history people have sung together in groups, to rejoice and to mourn and to party and to pass the time. We are part of this tradition, looking back, looking forward, remembering old times and taking new chances."

Bobby McFerrin

From making us feel good, nurturing our creativity, healing us, boosting our self confidence and self belief (to name just a few) singing has benefits that can not be ignored. We need to rid ourselves of the notion that there are people who should and should not sing (good or bad singers). Singing is for all of us.

"Choral singing calms the heart and boosts endorphin levels. It improves lung function. It increases pain thresholds and reduces the need for pain medication. It also seems to improve your outlook, boosting mood and self-esteem while alleviating feelings of stress and depression."

Further discussion about the idea that singing can actually change the brain can be found in this Tedx talk with Tania de Jong.

"Tania de Jong AM makes the case that people singing together can change the brain. Pushing the idea that creativity is the strategic tool of the 21st century, she says how our voices have been silenced and that it's not doing us any good. She explains how singing is a survival mechanism, how it makes our hearts beat together and can help heal strokes and depression."

This talk by Katie Kat discusses the idea that singing is a necessity. It connects us to ourselves and others. Singing is a social activity and builds communities.

"Why is it necessary to sing? The human voice is an incredible superpower we all have. Science is just beginning to understand how good singing is for our bodies, hearts and minds! Be inspired to sing every day to improve your connection to yourself and the world around you!"
